Unsightly leg veins can be visually unappealing and painful. But why do they happen and what can we do about them?

Varicose veins and spider veins are caused by damaged valves in the veins that prevent blood from flowing normally. When these valves weaken, some blood flows backward and accumulates in the vein. Extra blood in the vein puts pressure on the walls of the vein causing the blood to pool.

There are different causative factors involved in the occurrence of unhealthy leg veins including injury, poor circulation, obesity, pregnancy, old age, or a family history of spider or varicose veins.

Depending on the type of vein, there are many different treatment options to reduce or remove unwanted or unhealthy leg veins.

Self-Care for Spider and Varicose Veins

There are certain things that can be done at home to either prevent or minimize the appearance of unhealthy leg veins. One of the main goals of self-care for leg veins is to improve circulation.

Compression stockings prevent the pooling of blood in a vein and promote normal circulation.  Exercise and elevation of the legs are also beneficial in prevention. Individuals who sit for long periods of time should take breaks to get up and walk around every 30 minutes. But beware! Too much of anything is no good. So, individuals who stand for long periods of time should take sit breaks every 30 minutes.

Medical Procedures for Leg Vein Removal

Over the years, different treatment procedures and devices have been developed to remove unhealthy veins.

For example, sclerotherapy, which is the most common treatment for leg veins consists of small injections of saline solution into the unhealthy vein causing the vein to collapse.

Radiofrequency ablation is more invasive and is the removal of tissue or a varicose vein using the heat from an electric current produced by a radio wave.

An ambulatory phlebectomy is the removal of superficial veins through small slits on the legs.

However, we offer and recommend laser therapy, which is used to collapse the unhealthy vein that is later reabsorbed by the body.

Laser Therapy for Leg Vein Removal

At Couture Med Spa, we use the Starlux 500 by Palomar with the Lux 1064 handpiece on our clients which is specially designed to treat spider veins on the legs. The Lux 1064 handpiece sends energy into the blood and vessel walls, where it is absorbed by the blood. The blood is heated by the absorption of energy, and the vessel coagulates and closes off. The constricted vessel then regenerates, and the treated leg veins disappear from the surface of the skin. This treatment is FDA-approved and safe for all skin types. We only use this treatment on spider veins. Medical procedures outside of Couture Med Spa must be used on varicose veins.
